Minister for Highways E.V. Velu said in the Legislative Assembly on Friday that the State government will execute road infrastructure projects of 403 crores to alleviate vehicular traffic congestion in Chennai, in addition to Metro Rail.

He stated before the House that a flyover will be built at the Madhya Kailash intersection to connect Rajiv Gandhi Road and Sardar Patel Road at a cost of Rs 56 crore. He stated a 3.14-kilometer-long elevated corridor would be built on Mount-Poonamallee-Avadi Road between the Ramapuram and Mugalivakkam junctions. At the Mount Medavakkam Road-Inner Ring Road intersection, an underpass would be built.

East Tambaram, West Tambaram, and Mudichur would be linked by a pedestrian tunnel and service road. He stated that a link road would be built to connect Tambaram Shanmugam Road to the Chennai-Tiruchi National Highway. “In the first phase,” he added, “detailed project studies for these two projects will be created at a cost of Rs. 80 lakh.”

Mr. Velu stated that the Highway Research Station would be renovated with cutting-edge research equipment to make it a world-class institution.
