Sulthan’s first-day box office collection: A record high for Karthi
Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, actor Karthi’s new film Sulthan, which opened on Friday (April 2), received a rousing reception at the Chennai box office. According to trade analyst LM Kaushik, the actioner grossed Rs 55 lakh on the day and emerged as the young star’s best opener of his career. The previous record-holder was Theeran, who received Rs 52 lakh.
Sulthan arrives at a time when the Tamil film industry is attempting to return to normalcy after the Covid-19 pandemic; Vijay’s Master opened to a remarkable reception at the box office during Pongal despite theatres running at 50% capacity and went on to become a blockbuster. Simbu’s Eeswaran, Chakra, and Paris Jeyaraj, on the other hand, fell short of hopes.
Karthi’s first collaboration with filmmaker Bakkiyaraj Kannan and features him in a new avatar. Rashmika Mandanna plays the leading lady in the film, which is her first Tamil film. It has received mixed to favorable reviews, with the majority of reviewers praising Karthi’s performance and the honesty with which it was performed.
Meanwhile, Karthi is having a packed international schedule and will soon be seen in Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan. The film is based on the same-named book and stars Thambi in the role of Chola feudatory Vandiyadevan. Vikram is joined by Mollywood star Jayaram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and Trisha in the cast.
TN opening number is also said to be a career best for the star.
