Tamilnadu Field Archery Development & Welfare Association
The sport ‘Field Archery’ was introduced in our state in the year 2012 by Mr.Kesavan, who is the current working president of the association. As the first step in the development of the sport, with the tireless effort put by the association – our state (Tamilnadu) was permitted to play ‘Field Archery’ in the National School Games Federation which gave us 28 medals that took Tamilnadu to the podium. Last month, the Tamilnadu government allotted rupees 10 crores of funds for the welfare of medallists who achieved in various sports in the National School Games Federation. Field Archery also included in the list of sports for the first time.
As the sport received the first step of recognition in the state, but still a lot more to be done to bring & develop, popularise the sport within the state and bring more recognition; thus we have launched it state-wide with district representatives/chapters with the ideology of “
Field Archery in Nook and Corner of Tamilnadu”. Chief Guest for this event Kalaimamani Abirami Ramanthan inaugurated the event waving a green flag and launched our initiative at 11 am, on Friday, the 30th of October 2020 in a formal event to be held at Courtyard by Marriott hotel, Anna Salai, Chennai.
Annual General Body Meeting was held and new elected executive members sworn in during the event. Mr.T.Natarajan took over as President, Mr.Mani Vasagam (alias Vasu) as General Secretary along with other executive committee members. So far, 26 districts in the state has representation in the association and we are expecting representation from other districts in the state sooner.
Chief Guest Kalaimamani Abirami Ramanathan said just like “Tamil is the oldest language in the country, Archery otherwise bow & arrow also dates back to the oldest weaponry referring our scripture Ramayana; also referring Ram-Sita marriage ‘Swayamvaram’ has significance of Ram by lifting & tied the bow & arrow challenge. He said, archery is a brave game and India’s highest honour in the field of sports is Arjuna Award which the character Arjuna was a pioneer in Archery. Thus the sport of Archery has more importance and significance to our tradition and culture. He then wished the association to develop the sport with in the nook and corner of the state and extended a support of Rs.50,000 donation every year from him for the development and welfare of the sport in Tamilnadu. He said sport is very much connected to life, as sport is the first thing which makes us realise victory and defeat. He said even in wikipedia, Archery is not referred to Tamilnadu or India but it is a sport which took birth in our country. He urged the association to work hard and make our students win in ‘field archery’ in the international sporting arena. He gave advise to the association to make a space available for ‘Field Archery’ in tieup with Sports Development Authority of Tamilnadu (SDAT). He appreciated the newly elected President, Secretary and Executive committee members who are assuming charge to do the best for the betterment of sport in the state.”
T.Natarajan, President of the association said in his acceptance speech that he would do his best and requested all the members to work hard to take ‘field archery’ into every nook and corner of Tamilnadu.
Mani Vasagam, General Secretary of the association spoke. He said it was challenging time to organise annual general body meeting having representatives of 26 districts in the state during Covid19 time. He said internationally there are two bodies – one is ‘World archery federation’ and other one is ‘International field archery association’ and both has different vision & mission. We are following guidelines from ‘International field archery association’ as it is specific to field archery/indoor archery. Olympics has only World Archery’s outdoor game but we will strive hard to bring field archery also in Olympics, or even field archery training can upgrade them to learn Archery at a later stage. He said field archery helps students to improve patience, concentration and focus; and inculcate habit of determination and aim in their academics also. We are striving hard to bring Field Archey in the ‘CM Trophy’ in our state, now we have 26 districts having field archery but to qualify in CM trophy we need to take it to all the districts in the state. He wished all the committee members for doing their best.
In the 65th National School Games which was held in November last year at Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh; Tamil Nadu won 28 medals in Field Archery viz. 4 Gold, 3 Silver and 6 Bronze medals in Individual category and 4 Silver, 11 Bronze in playing as Team. We are hoping to win at least 50+ medals in the 2021 games.
