“I have a request for newlywed couples. Stop with just one or two children,” Stalin said. “The federal and state governments are investing a lot of money on family planning and awareness initiatives… This is for the good of the country and families.”

In joking, the chief minister also mentioned seeing an advertisement that asked why we need a child since we are all children.

Stalin’s remarks came at a time when the BJP-led union government stated earlier this year that no legislation is required to prevent couples from having more children as a population control tool because public awareness programmes were effective. Some BJP figures, including Union Minister Giriraj Singh and MP Ravi Kishan, have called for legislation to curb population growth, although Minister of State for Health Bharati Pravin Pawar told the Rajya Sabha in July that the government’s ongoing efforts aim to stabilise population by 2045.

Stalin urged the couples to name their children in Tamil and to practise equality inside their homes, citing the Dravidian model as a basic principle of social justice. He also praised HR&CE Minister Sekar Babu, stating that there are a few groups in the state who are attempting to use religion as a political weapon.

“Some people are unable to bear the HR&CE department’s varied welfare initiatives.” So they’re attempting to discredit the DMK government,” Stalin explained. “Temples, whether monarchy or democracy, are for the people.” Temples are not the personal property of anyone. During the Justice Party’s tenure, the (HR&CE) department was founded solely to change that.”

Stalin highlighted his father’s and former chief minister M Karunanidhi’s contributions to temples. “Following him, presently Sekar Babu is handling the department in accordance with our Dravidian governance model,” the chief minister stated. “Those who have no issue with politics use religion, and when we ask for evidence, they have none.”
