Rehabilitation of a special school for children with muscular dystrophy.
V. Arvind Jagdeesh of Teynampet was overjoyed to see his school being renovated and transformed into an integrated complex with an education-cum-vocational training center and a research facility. He was one of 15 pupils at Model School Road’s special school for children with muscular dystrophy, the first of its type in Tamil Nadu.
In 2009, then-CM M Karunanidhi dedicated the school. However, the school’s amenities have deteriorated over time. “I am delighted to see my school given new life.” “I want that the government constructs similar institutions outside of Chennai to assist youngsters like me,” Jagdeesh remarked.
DMK MLA Dr. Ezhilan Naganathan took the initiative and gathered the stakeholders under the “Namakku Naame” plan, keeping his election pledge to Jagdeesh and his classmates to restore and improve the school’s facilities. “Facilities have been established to provide medical care, vocational training for parents and pupils, and educational opportunities.” It will also function as a research center for specialists,” added the MLA, who also serves on the state advisory council for the differently-abled. On Saturday, Chief Minister M K Stalin will dedicate the new facility.
Under the initiative, the Greater Chennai Corporation and the Muscular Dystrophy Association of India each paid Rs 25 lakh. Two completely equipped physiotherapy rooms, as well as psychiatric counseling for children and parents, have been built, and a bus with a lift has been purchased. Special buses are currently being used to transport students from Teynampet to Pallikaranai. “With the increased bus service, we will be able to transport 10 more children from Kilpauk to the Vyasarpadi region.” “It would make it easier for many families to bring their children to school and minimize their financial burden,” said N Gomathi, the teacher in charge.
