Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom dies at the age of 96.
Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom has died. Buckingham Palace disclosed on Thursday that the Queen was being kept under medical observation on the recommendation of her physicians, considering that her health had deteriorated over the last year. The Queen had earlier postponed her virtual meeting with the Privy Council on Wednesday after her physicians recommended her to rest.
The royal family gathered at Balmoral Castle, where the Queen was being monitored medically. In her last moments, her son Prince Charles, his wife Camilla, Prince Edward, his wife Sophie, Prince Andrew, and Prince William were by her side. While it was initially claimed that Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle were travelling to Scotland together, it was later discovered that just the Duke was visiting Balmoral. Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, was also not at Balmoral Castle at the time of the Queen’s death.
The royal family’s Twitter account acknowledged the news, writing, “The Queen died peacefully in Balmoral this afternoon.” “The King and The Queen Consort will remain in Balmoral today evening and will return to London tomorrow,” the statement said, referring to Prince Charles and his wife Camilla.
Meanwhile, amid the rain, people gathered in front of Buckingham Palace to await the news. Others congregated at the Queen Victoria Memorial, which is located just across the street from the Palace. There were also many who braved the weather to congregate outside the Balmoral Castle, where the Queen was held under guard.
