India takes over the UN Security Council presidency on a monthly basis.

Under India’s UNSC leadership in December, two flagship ministerial events are scheduled for December 14 (Reformed Multilateralism) and 15 (Globalization) (Counter-Terrorism). The festivities will be presided over by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

On December 1, India assumed the monthly rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), the second time in its two-year term as an elected member of the Council in 2021-22.

India had previously assumed the UN Security Council presidency in August 2021.

Under India’s UNSC leadership in December, two flagship ministerial events are scheduled for December 14 (Reformed Multilateralism) and 15 (Globalization) (Counter-Terrorism). The festivities will be presided over by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

On December 14, India will hold a “high-level open debate” before the Security Council on “Maintenance of International Peace and Security: New Orientation for Reformed Multilateralism.” The New Orientation for Reformed Multilateralism (NORMS) initiative envisions improvements to the current multilateral architecture, with the United Nations at its core, to make it more representative and fit for purpose.

According to sources, the purpose of this open debate is to encourage UN member states to continue the discourse by discussing on the elements of a new multilateralism orientation and how best to move forward in this respect in a time-bound way. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and UN General Assembly President Csaba Korosi will attend.

A high-level briefing on “Threats to International Peace and Security Caused by Terrorist Acts: A Global Approach to Counter Terrorism” is also scheduled for December 15. — Challenges and Way Forward.”

“Because the threat of terrorism is grave, universal, and global in nature, this briefing wants to emphasise the importance of collaborative and coordinated actions to address the threat of terrorism.”Recognizing that “there has been a revival of terrorist activity in recent times…and that the existing and upcoming challenges demand for a renewed collaborative approach to terrorism,” the briefing “will call for a reinvigorated collective approach to terrorism.”provide an opportunity for (UNSC) members to build on the recent deliberations of the Security Council’s Counter-Terrorism Committee meeting in Mumbai and Delhi on October 28-29.”
