Cricket Australia Is Still Deciding On A Test Captaincy Replacement; Smith and Cummins Are The Favorites

Cricket Australia’s panel, which has been constituted to pick the new Test skipper and vice-captain of the Australian men’s cricket team, is said to have interviewed Pat Cummins and Steve Smith. According to NewsCorp, the pair were interviewed for their respective roles on Wednesday via a video connection from the Gold Coast.

The panel that interviewed Cummins and Smith included Mel Jones, Richard Freudenstein, Cricket Australia chief executive Nick Hockley, and selectors George Bailey and Tony Dodemaide.

Cummins will be chosen Australia’s next Test captain, with Steve Smith serving as his deputy, according to the source. If Cummins is appointed the next Test captain, he will be the first fast bowler to command Australia since the 1950s. In such a case, the vice-duty captain becomes even more important, because Cummins will need to be rested from time to time to manage workload fatigue, and Smith will be compelled to take over as captain in Cummins’ absence.

The Australian cricket board was dealt a big blow last Friday when Tim Paine announced his resignation as Test captain in the aftermath of the disclosure of inappropriate text messages he sent to a former Cricket Tasmania staffer in 2017. Paine held a news conference from Hobart, where he apologized for his previous behavior and revealed his intention to resign as Australia’s Test captain. Paine took the decision to step down as Test captain after Cricket Australia warned him that his texts will be made public.

Paine, who has played 35 Tests and as many ODIs for his country, took over as captain after his predecessor Steve Smith and former vice-captain David Warner resigned due to the sandpaper incident. Paine became the first Australian skipper since Steve Waugh to retain the Ashes series in England in 2019.

Meanwhile, Paine has some unfavorable records, including losing two back-to-back Test series against India at home. He is the first Australian skipper to suffer a home Test series defeat against India.
