‘Players Cannot Hide Injury,’ says BCCI Official in Reaction to Saba Karim’s Remark About Shubman Gill.
Former national selector, Saba Karim’s statement on Shubman Gill’s injury was allegedly not well received by the BCCI, with an official slamming him for his ‘unfortunate’ remark. Shubman Gill has been ruled out for 8 weeks with a shin injury, and he is unlikely to play in the first half of India’s five-Test series against England. Shubman Gill, who was chosen over the in-form Mayank Agarwal, was unable to make an impression against New Zealand in the WTC Final 2021.
Saba Karim’s statement on Shubman Gill’s injury is slammed by a BCCI official.
A senior BCCI official slammed former cricketer Saba Karim, saying that such a comment is unfortunate and should have been avoided because BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has stated that every protocol is followed and fitness assessments of contracted cricketers are done without fail.
By making such a comment, he has called into doubt Ganguly’s leadership, who is quite strict about the standards being followed in terms of player fitness and selection.” It is a significant charge to make since he is attempting to throw doubt on Shubman’s integrity and Ganguly’s leadership. Personally, I believe this is a cry for attention from Karim because he was a part of the Indian cricket set-up until very recently and he obviously understands that there is a proper process in place wherein a player goes through a fitness test and there is no way in today’s day and age for a player to hide his injury. I’m not sure if that happened while he was a player or a selector, but his comment is really sad.
Shubman was not injured, and this occurred throughout the tour. The youngster has a high degree of ethics, and it is said that a former player who has played a Test match and a GM in the BCCI can make such an outrageous comment the official continued
During a session on the podcast ‘Khelneeti,’ Saba Karim stated that he was astonished that Shubman Gill’s injury evaded the attention of the medical team and that questions will be asked about how the opener passed the fitness test while injured. Karim also stated that Mayank Agarwal, a Karnataka batsman, should be given an opportunity against England in place of Gill. Karim stated that his first choice would be Mayank because of his ‘terrific’ home series.
