The Asian Games were set to take place from September 10 to September 22 in the Chinese city of Hangzhou. The continental Games, however, have been postponed until 2023 owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Hangzhou, China, will host the Asian Games.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Asian Games 2022, which were scheduled to take place in September in the Chinese city of Hangzhou, have been postponed until 2023. According to Reuters, the Olympic Council of Asia has confirmed that the Asian Games will be postponed until 2023.

The call, which was first confirmed by Chinese state media, was made as China is dealing with a resurgence of Covid-19 infections. Shanghai, the country’s financial hub, has been under lockdown for a month, while more restrictions have been imposed in Beijing, which is now on edge.

The decision comes despite China’s successful hosting of the Winter Olympics in Beijing earlier this year. Covid-19 regulations were strictly enforced, and the Games were conducted behind closed doors in February 2022.

Notably, India’s Sports Minister Anurag Thakur stated last month that a decision on India’s participation in the Asian Games would be made based on China’s evaluation of the situation and readiness to host the continental event in the midst of the mounting instances.

“All other participating nations are debating,” Thakur said, adding that “India would make a decision in due course.” “However, before doing so, the host country should make it obvious what they are thinking and how prepared they are.”

The Asian Games are the most recent major sporting event to be postponed or cancelled as a result of the Covid-19 controversy. The Olympic Games, the world’s largest sports event, were postponed until 2021 owing to the epidemic in 2020. Even though a segment of the Japanese people was opposed to the country hosting the worldwide sporting event, the Summer Games went forward.

The Olympic Games carried on as planned, with competitors from around the world experiencing the new normal as they dealt with the pressures of the Olympics in Tokyo.

The Asian Games were held in Jakarta and Palembang in 2018. India finished eighth in the medal table with 69 medals, including 15 gold medals. In the absence of the Asian Games this year, India’s finest athletes will focus on the Commonwealth Games. From July 28 through August 8, the CWG will be place in Birmingham.
