Dr. Subbiah Shanmugam, the ABVP‘s former national president, was arrested by Chennai police on Saturday for reportedly harassing a female neighbor. The 62-year-old was detained after a neighbor accused him of harassing her by urinating on her door and putting used surgical masks at her door in 2020, according to police. Following this, the NSUI (National Students’ Union of India), the Indian National Congress party’s student branch, urged that the ABVP leader be jailed for reportedly harassing a woman in an apartment complex.
Following the victim’s complaint, police filed a complaint under sections 271 (Disobedience to quarantine rule) and 427 (Mischief causing damage to the sum of fifty rupees) of the IPC, as well as the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Women Harassment Act. Dr. Shanmugam was accused of harassing a woman who lived in the same building over a parking space dispute, according to the complaint. The woman reportedly claimed that the ex-ABVP president used to dump trash, pee, and masturbate on her doorstep, all of which were captured on camera by the surveillance system. Meanwhile, Dr. Shanmugam claims the charge is “fake” and that the CCTV film was “doctored.”
