International Yoga Day was celebrated at S.D.N.B.Vaishnav College for Women on Wednesday, the 20th of June in the mini auditorium. The audience was comprised of 2nd and 3rd years of the Departments of Statistics, Mathematics, Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology and Economics. The Chief Guest was Mr. Venkat, a trainer from Heartfulness Institute. He described each of the stages of Ashtanga yoga (Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi). He delineated the powers of human brain that is endowed with cerebral cortex containing 100 billion neurons. He added that this number is tremendously increased due to meditation as revealed by a study in the Brain Research Institute, University of California, Los Angeles. He practically taught them a relaxation technique for calming the mind and body. Then he guided students to meditate for fifteen minutes.
